A lesser-known fact about Chicago

Alinea's neighborhood park was once Chicago's city cemetery — one stubborn tomb, the Couch Mausoleum, was never moved and still stands among the trees.

Resurrection Mary

Chicago's most famous hitchhiker is a fair-haired girl in a white dancing dress who accepts rides on Archer Avenue, sits quietly with cold hands, and vanishes at the gates of Resurrection Cemetery. Cab drivers have reported her since the 1930s. None has ever collected the fare.

The local landmark

Couch Mausoleum, Lincoln Park, Chicago stands as Chicago's defining structure — the sight that anchors the city in memory long after the meal is finished.
