A lesser-known fact about Vienna

When warned of revolution brewing in Russia, an Austrian minister reportedly scoffed: 'And who will lead it — Herr Trotsky from the Café Central?'

The Basilisk of the Lantern Lane

In 1212, a creature hatched from a rooster's egg in a well on Schönlaterngasse — a basilisk whose gaze meant death. A baker's brave apprentice lowered a mirror into the well, and the monster perished at the sight of itself. The house called 'zum Basilisken' still marks the spot.

The local landmark

Palais Ferstel, Vienna stands as Vienna's defining structure — the sight that anchors the city in memory long after the meal is finished.
